Employability Skills Development
About this course
What is it?
The Employability Skills Development course takes an activity-based approach to raising learners’ awareness about employer expectations and the working environment. Developed in response to an increasing national focus on work-related learning, it will meet the needs of providers looking for a programme of activities to support learners in preparation for vocational training, for achieving an employability qualification, or for getting a job.
The Employability Skills Development resources support teaching and learning; they aim to improve learners’ knowledge and understanding of the workplace.
Learners complete an initial self-assessment to identify what they would like to improve and then choose from dozens activities to develop their skills for the workplace. The activities are split into 12 sections:
- Self-management
- Team working
- Business and enterprise
- Customer awareness
- Problem solving
- Communication
- Working with numbers
- IT in the workplace
- Applying for a job
- Exploring job opportunities
- Rights and responsibilities at work
- Health and safety in the workplace
The Employability Programme has developed significantly over the past few years and the last Cohort made significant strides.
- We have 6 young people from our previous cohorts complete the media course with Creative Stirling
- We have had 1 young person from our Balfron cohort volunteer with us for 4 weeks of our latest provision and start his Peer mentoring ASDAN and is keen to come back next year.
- From the latest cohort we have 2 YP complete their CIBT and gain CSCS cards. 2 have college interviews for pre-apprenticeship starting in January.
- 1 has a potential work experience in January and an application in for college next August.
- And 2 are returning to school with 1 in a part time job after school.
- A college visit, and a visit from college to the group has been a great addition to the provision.
- The group (and 1 YP from a previous cohort) completed an Animation Course.
- The group also did a trip to the Job centre in Stirling and our usual visit from them to the group too which is always very informative.
- Weekly visits to the library for use of ICT for CV writing etc
